DISTURBED

6 MARCH – 10 APRIL 2022
The work of the exhibiting artists is beautiful and disturbing at the same time. Painted ruins have an aesthetic tranquility and are beautifully lit. The drawn insects and flowers come from the artist’s garden. The art on display shows the world as it is, beautiful but hard at the same time.

DISTURBED, a group exhibition by Anne Vincent Dijkstra, Tanya Janssen and Eliot Allsop.

Anne Vincent Dijkstra paints using only Prussian blue.  His work mainly consists of realistic painting of ruins, where Dijkstra is mainly concerned with the beauty of lines, shapes and compositions that he finds in the chaos. For this exhibition he has created new work that plays with sharpness. His non-sharp paintings show everyday scenes with a disturbing atmosphere.

Tanya Janssen paints how nature overgrows vacant buildings. Beautiful daylight falls on the painted leaves of weeds. It produces beautiful landscape paintings. However, the paintings evoke an atmosphere that is disturbing. Nature takes possession of the public space. For this exhibition, Janssen has created new work that uses Artificial Intelligence to complement her other work. In doing so, she makes a link between nature that is taking back our civilization and the use of AI.

Eliot Allsop draws existing flora and fauna with black pencil, often from his own backyard. By zooming in on the micro level he shows a world with apocalyptic undertones. His drawings tell about the ability that people have to self-deception. The world around us is not always what it appears to be. The line between civilization and destruction is thin. With a sense of nostalgia, Allsop shows us a glimpse of the future. A future in which he looks back to the now. Eliot is fascinated by our infinite capacity to destroy ourselves with the world that we create.
