FOOL ON THE HILL

MARTIN SCHUSTER . CHRISTOPH ROßNER . THERESA ROTHE .
21 NOVEMBER – 20 DECEMBER 2026

The exhibition Fool on the Hill brings together three Leipzig-based artists. They share a strong artistic affinity: a fascination with the fairy-tale, with ambivalent narratives, and with visual worlds that balance between the familiar and the uncanny.

Galerie Nasty Alice is pleased to announce Fool on the Hill, a group exhibition by Martin Schuster, Christoph Roßner and Theresa Rothe, curated by Martin Schuster.

You are very welcome at the opening on Saturday 3 – 5 pm.

The exhibition title is drawn from The Beatles song ‘The Fool on the Hill’, which centers on the figure of the quiet outsider: someone who seemingly withdraws from the world, yet observes it from a strong, idiosyncratic perspective. Although his head appears to be in the clouds, he observes the movements around him with remarkable clarity. This multifaceted figure; part fool, part observer, and part tragic hero, serves as a key starting point for the exhibition.

In his paintings, Martin Schuster explores themes such as consumer behavior, desire, and the impact of capitalism on our well-being. Childhood memories serve as a key source of inspiration. Schuster’s work is characterized by an apparent lightness that contrasts with a critical perspective on the urge to consume, social hierarchies, and the relentless pursuit of growth and profit. Schuster depicts parties, travels, and forms of escapism within a contemporary surrealist universe. His landscapes often function as theatrical backdrops, set in a post-apocalyptic world where the present and future merge. A recurring motif is the coexistence of seemingly contradictory forces: boundless pleasure alongside greed, and technological and intellectual potential alongside a senseless craving for sensation.

Christoph Roßner (1982) lives and works in Leipzig, Germany. Roßner studied fine arts and painting at the academies in Weimar and Dresden. Christoph’s work is included in private and public collections, including Sammlung für zeitgenössische kunst der Bundesrepubliek Deutschland. Over the past decade, Christoph has collaborated with Romer Young Gallery (San Francisco, USA) and dst.galerie (Münster, Germany). Roßner recently presented his work at Nina Mielcarczyk Galerie in Leipzig. Everyday objects take center stage in Roßner’s paintings: tables, lamps, newspapers, and trees become protagonists in a distinctive visual world. Through subtle shifts in form and meaning, they acquire almost human qualities. Landscapes, interiors, and still lifes form the basis for a personal mythology in which humor, ambiguity, and the bizarre converge.

Theresa Rothe (1990) lives and works in Leipzig, Germany. Rothe studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts (2022) and has since exhibited at vorious locations, including the Museum der bildende Künste Leipzig. Her work is included in private and public collections, including the Städtische Galerie Dresden. Theresa is also a co-founder of project space Klub Portitz in Leipzig. In her sculptures, installations, and kinetic works, Rothe explores psychological experiences and ideas surrounding normality and belonging. Her often life-sized, plush-like figures hover between vulnerability, alienation, and comfort. Inspired by dreams, fantasies, and inner states of mind, Theresa creates enigmatic worlds where diverse realities and emotions converge.

The exhibition is made possible by Stichting Cultuur Eindhoven.
