MARIA DE VET

“As the Balinese painter Gusti Nyoman Lempad said: Bare my paintings to the world so that all can see both their beauty as well as their shortcomings.”

Maria de Vet (1945), lives and works in her hometown Eindhoven, The Nertherlands. She graduated from the Academy for Industrial Design in Eindhoven (1987). After her studies, Maria received a startstipendium by Mondriaan Fonds. After being active as an artist for several years, Maria de Vet mainly worked on commission. It was in 2016 that De Vet took up her autonomous painting again. Galerie Nasty Alice has been working with Maria since then, and her work is now loved by many art lovers. Her work is part of public collections such as Huis Henk Visch (Eindhoven) and in various private collections.

Maria de Vet became fascinated by seeing Velasquez’s “Las Meninas” in the Prado in Madrid and by Goya’s “Las Caprichos”. She finds her inspiration in the work of the old masters from the past century and in today’s mass media: internet, magazines, photos. But also, in her dreams. Maria’s paintings are created by digitally composing images. She uses work she previously painted, and combines them with photos, taken or found. She creates with a collage-like technique of cutting and pasting, both digitally and spatially, a unique world that is a source of inspiration for her paintings. Her work evokes a feeling of nostalgia but is painted in a contemporary manner. Maria shows everyday scenes with a sense of humor. People and animals are usually central to Maria’s work, and in particular women. Animals appear in her paintings because they enliven the image.
