14 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY 2024

The gallery shows work by four artists that connects past and present. It shows stories that are close to the artists themselves. It is an investigation into identity and origins. Research is an essential part of the maker’s artistry.

Something Related, a group exhibition by Anouk Vasilda, Jerrold Saija, Jordie Rovers and Marianne van Heeswijk.

Anouk Vasilda (2000), born in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, recently graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, won the Carat Lucas Gassel Prize for young academy talent at the Cacaofabriek in Helmond. During the exhibition, Vasilda shows her film Saminah, in which she delves into her Surinamese-Javanese roots and family history, that is intertwined with colonialism. “My ancestors were only passengers of their own fate. Can I be the captain of mine?”

Jerrold Saija focuses on colonization and decolonization and the deep marks this has left on Moluccan society in general and the Moluccan body in particular. For his artistic practice, Saija draws inspiration from what remains of this past. Saija is guided by the gallery, in collaboration with Museum Jan Cunen (Oss), during Talenthub jump!

Jordie Rovers has an interest in archeology, in the imperfection and uncontrolled traces that humanity has left behind. Just like an archaeologist Rovers analyzes historical objects such as an old bullet or a piece of a watch. Rovers is guided by the gallery, in collaboration with Museum Jan Cunen (Oss), during Talenthub jump!

Marianne van Heeswijk ( 1961), born in Veghel, currently lives and works in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, won the third prize in the Open section of ‘The World of Wearble Art’ in New Zealand last year. Van Heeswijk creates sculptures by combining and processing items she collects at flea markets. In this way she gives discarded products a second life and brings folk culture to the world of galleries and museums. For the exhibition, Van Heeswijk has created work that moves between fashion and art.
